Application procedure

With a view to streamlining the processing of applications and the matching of pupils to pupil-masters, all applications for pupillage with members of Temple Chambers are centrally processed by the Pupillage Committee once a year.

We require all applications to be made on our standard application form (download here) and do not accept application by CV and covering letter. Six copies of the completed form should be addressed to the Pupillage Committee and submitted to Temple Chambers by hand or by post within the month of September. In the absence of exceptional circumstances, late applications will not be considered. Nor do we entertain applications by email.

Interviews of shortlisted candidates are held in November or December and offers are usually made in January or February of the following year.

Temple Chambers Pupillage Award

We currently offer an ex gratia Pupillage Award, which gives each successful applicant for the Award a subsidy during his or her pupillage with Temple Chambers. It is made on merit, although the applicant’s financial position will also be taken into account.

Pupillage at Temple Chambers is intended only for those proceeding bona fide and with due diligence to qualify for and to practise at the Bar of Hong Kong. We do not set a quota for pupillages, but competition is keen. The overriding criterion is merit; applicants should have a first-class or upper second-class degree in law or have completed the CPE conversion course to the same standard. However, we also give consideration to other strengths such as a good degree in another discipline, a further degree in law and outstanding performance in mooting etc.
